Biography
The interviewee was born 24 July 1922 in Ampthill Road, Bedford. An only child, she recalls having a very happy childhood, her father was a fishmonger, also working in a hospital as a stoker. Her mother was a crane driver. Her grandmother lived with her for a while, and during World War Two, her grandmother would take in men and look after them. Her grandfather worked at the engineering works in Bedford. She went to a local school. Leaving school at fifteen, she started as an apprentice in Gladys Clayton’s, where you could have clothes made to measure. She joined the Land Army at seventeen, and worked for three years until she fell pregnant with her daughter. She has many fond memories of working for the Land Army. Her husband was from Yorkshire, and met him through the war, where he became one of her mother's boarders. She went back to work part-time at Gladys Clayton’s and thoroughly enjoyed sewing.
