Biography
Hallie Quinn Brown was an American educator and pioneer of the movement for African American women’s clubs. Born in 1850 to former slaves, she grew up in Canada and attended Wilberforce University in Ohio. Graduating in 1873, she went on to work in plantation and public schools in the US and later served as principal of Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, under Booker T Washington. In 1893 she joined the Colored Woman’s League of Washington, DC, which became part of the National Association of Colored Women. The same year she became professor of elocution at Wilberforce University and gave frequent lectures on African American life and temperance in the US and throughout Europe. Throughout the 1920s she was active in Republican politics and campaigned for African American women on behalf of President Calvin Coolidge.
