Biography
Suniti Devi was the daughter of the reformist Keshub Chandra Sen of Calcutta and was the Maharani of Cooch Behar, British India. Suniti married Nripendra Narayan, the Maharaja of Cooch Behar in 1878, at age 14, and the couple had four sons and three daughters together. Suniti was a women’s rights activist and in 1881 was the brains behind the establishment of the girls’ school Suniti Academy, which her husband set up. Suniti gave annual grants to the institution and exempted the girls from paying tuition fees. In 1887, she became the first Indian woman to be awarded CIE (Companions of the Order of the Indian Empire). In 1908, Suniti and her sister Sucharu Devi financed the foundation of the Maharani Girls’ High School at Darjeeling and in 1932 Suniti became President of the All Bengal Women’s Union. She died suddenly in 1932.
